If you spend even a few days in Malaysia, you’ll quickly realise one thing about how the locals commute. We use the Touch ‘n Go card, a lot. And I mean a lot. It’s almost part of daily life here. Locals don’t really think twice about it. We just tap and go.
For travellers, this can be a bit surprising at first. You might expect to rely on cash or your credit card, but suddenly you’re at a train gate or a highway toll — and you need this one specific card.
Driving on highways? No choice
If you’re renting a car in Malaysia, this becomes even more important. Our highways are mostly toll-based, and almost all of them use Touch ‘n Go lanes. That means you must have one ready when you pass through.
No card? You’re going to have a problem.
Some rental cars come with a card provided, but don’t assume. Always double check. Please ask the person in charge, or the rental company. This is one of the small things that can ruin your journey if you overlook it.
Taking the Train? You’ll Need It
Public transport in Malaysia, especially around Kuala Lumpur, is built around Touch ‘n Go. Whether you’re hopping on the LRT, MRT, or even the monorail, this Touch ‘n Go card makes everything smoother.
You can buy single journey ticket, but honestly it is disgusting! You’ll need to queue at the machine, select your destination, pay, and repeat the whole process again later. Disgusting? Yucks, I personally hate it!
With Touch ‘n Go, you just tap in and tap out. That’s it. It’s very similar to how people use the Suica card in Japan, the Octopus card in Hong Kong, or the Oyster card in London.
Parking Is Super Easy
Here’s something many tourists don’t realise, that Touch ‘n Go is also widely used for parking space for car.
Instead of taking a ticket, finding a payment machine, and paying cash before exiting, you can just tap your card when you enter and tap again when you leave. No queues, no paying at the machines, no stress.
It’s simple, and once you get used to it, you’ll wonder why every country doesn’t do it this way.
So, Should You Get One?
Honestly, yes.
If you’re planning to stay in Malaysia for more than a day or two, getting a Touch ‘n Go card just makes your life easier. It’s cheap, easy to top up, and accepted in more places than you’d expect.
Think of it as your daily pass to move around smoothly — whether you’re commuting in the city, driving across states, or just trying to get out of a parking lot without hassle.
